Information for teachers

We realise how much work that teachers put into bringing groups to An Grianan, especially in the current climate. Here we want to start a two way dialogue with you to find out what it is you really want from us and to make sure you are getting all the information about what we have already put in place with you in mind.

We really want to hear your ideas on any shows / workshops / facilitations that you would like us to have .. just email us at angrianan@eircom.net with anything at all ...

Thanks

Daithi Ramsay

Brian Friel at An Grianán

Wed 28 September to Sat 1 October 2011 at 8pm

Aristocrats

by Brian Friel

A co-production between An Grianán and Workhouse Theatre Co

Tickets: Wed all tickets €10, Thu to Sat €15/€12

Set, like so many of Friel's plays, in the fictional Donegal village of Ballybeg, Aristocrats explores similar themes to his 19th century set drama The Home Place except here the focus in on an upper class Catholic family and the action takes place in the 1970s.

Ballybeg Hall is the decaying home of District Justice O'Donnell where those who come back for a wedding stay to attend a funeral. Friel's chronicle of three sisters and their 'peculiar' brother reveals the way 'in which the ache of one family becomes the microcosm for the ache of a society'. Directed by Iarla McGowan.

First produced by the Abbey Theatre in 1979, Aristocrats won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play (1988) and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Play (1989).

'a lovely play, funny and harrowing...Mr Friel makes the Irish condition synonymous with the human one.' Frank Rich, The New York Times

'an ironic, loving, imaginative, and all but faultless play. Make that a faultless play.'

Edith Oliver, The New Yorker

Winners and Afterplay

An Grianán Theatre

Tickets: €12/€10

Winners - directed by John McGinley

In Winners, a teenage couple study for their final examines on a sunny day outside. Their future seems to be all set: Mag is pregnant, they are engaged to be married, the lease for their flat is signed. The day, however, ends quite differently than expected. Fragile and poetic in style, it is a firm favourite of drama lovers the world over.

Afterplay - directed by Sean McCormack

Afterplay is Friel's homage to the Russian playwright Chekhov. Twenty years after their previous fictional lives ended, two characters from different Chekhov plays meet by chance. In a run-down café, Andrey Prozorov, the brother of Chekhov's Three Sisters (and husband of the ghastly Natasha), wanders in to find Sonia Serebryakova, niece of Uncle Vanya. Friel fleshes out the experiences they might have had and the relationship they might pursue.

"beautifully and tenderly written and significantly adds to the Chekhov canon." British Theatre Guide
