The Irish Youth Music Awards regional final, which is co-ordinated by Letterkenny Youth Information Centre, sees 11 young bands compete for a place in the national final in Dublin in April.

Above:Last year's regional winners Dear Science (pictured here with Michelle Doherty), will make a guest appearance on Friday also.
With 5 local heats already having taken place around the county in Letterkenny, Dungloe, Buncrana and Donegal town the competition is set to be intense, with Indigo Rushe, Freedomville, JDG, G Star, This Array, Matthew Trainor Experience, Lost Expectations, Cuban Science, April Fools, Hijacking Camels, Flea Circus all taking to the stage.
Last year’s regional winners Dear Science will perform as special guests on the evening. This year there has been huge interest in the event, with 27 bands from all across Donegal having participated in the local heats so far.
This is the third year of the Irish Youth Music Awards, with Donegal claiming victory in the national final in 2008 with Boy Number 7 and last year’s regional finalists Dear Science going on to be part of a very successful compilation album, which entered the Irish album charts in the top 20.
The Irish Youth Music Awards regional final works off a principle where all the competing bands have one vote and they have to select who they think will represent the county best at the national final. This is where the work really begins also however, as fellow bands are asked to work together to support the chosen act. If the Donegal act is successful in the national final all the local acts get to be part of a professionally recorded album in Dublin.
There is also the added bonus of all the bands learning a little bit more about the music industry along the way, as they are judged on putting on preparation gigs, developing websites for the local act and fundraising efforts to help bring the band and supporters to the national final.
