A comedy exclusive at An Grianán this November as Jeremy Hardy, one of the legends of British alternative comedy, performs at the theatre for what is the only date in the Republic on Ireland on his autumn tour.
Hailed by some as Britain's answer to Michael Moore, Jeremy Hardy is known for his leftist political views and self-deprecating manner.
Part of the new wave of the British alternative comedy scene which broke through in the late 1980s, Jeremy was winner of the Perrier Comedy Award in 1988 and has since become one of the UK's most respected stand-up comedians.
When he’s not touring Jeremy is now an essential member of BBC Radio 4’s News Quiz team as well as regularly appearing on I’m Sorry I Haven't a Clue and Just a Minute. Jeremy has also writen and performed his own series for Radio 4, the hugely successful Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation.
At one time the show held the distinction of being the most complained about radio show ever (one suspects that a certain now notorious Jonathan Ross/Russell Brand broadcast has stolen that particular record). It's far from the only incident that has seen him raise a few hackles.
An episode of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue in which he make a remark about Jesus' sexuality led to so many complaints that the material was edited out of the repeat edition. He was sacked from his regular column in UK broadsheet The Guardian ostensibly for not containing enough jokes but many commentators alledge that it was because of his anti-Blair sentiments.
Other issues which have landed him in hot water include his views on the Royal Family ("parasites"), Irish re-unification ("Northern Ireland is part of Ireland, not Britain, as can clearly be seen from aerial photographs") and made a film documentary in the West Bank in 1992, Jeremy Hardy vs. the Israeli Army, which went on general release throughout the UK in 2003, and was screened all over the world to widespread acclaim.
One of Jeremy's earliest acting roles was as Corporal Perkins in Blackadder Goes Forth in 1989 while more recent credits include Mock the Week (BBC2), Q.I. (BBC 2), Grumpy Old Men (BBC1), DVD Collection (BBC3), Back in the Day (BBC2), Human Rights, Human Wrongs (BBC2), Not Tonight with John Sergeant (BBC2) and BBC 2’s satirical look at the London Mayoral election All the Fun of the Mayor. Ever keen to diversify, Jeremy appeared in Hotel in 2003, a feature film directed by Mike Figgis opposite Burt Reynolds, David Schwimmer and Rhys Ifans.
He remains in high demand as a stand up comedian and has enjoyed numerous sellout tours of both the UK and Ireland.
‘Hilarious, detailed, gently self-depreciating act from a stand-up comic in complete control’ - The Independent
‘One minute lewd, the next blimpish, the next acerbic, he is always one step wide of insult and one ahead of expectation’ - The Financial Times
