By Henry James. Adapted by Liam Halligan.
A young country girl is employed as governess to two orphaned children in a large country house. She begins to hear strange noises and becomes convinced that the children are in communication with the ghosts of two notorious people from the children’s past. The question is, are these visitations real or do they exist only in the governess’s mind?
Is she emotionally manipulating two vulnerable children?
Is she protecting them from an evil force?
Or is she actually afraid of something hidden within herself?
The cast features Ruth Magill, Helen Delaney, Chris Simpson and Deirdre Monaghan.
Press Quotes
Sunday Business Post, Sara Keating, Sunday 13th April 2008
‘….gorgeously reproduced……….
'Ruth McGill's excellent performance as the tortured governess manages to elicit a deep emotional response despite her necessary reserve, and her interplay with the ghostly Flora (Helen Delaney) and the macabre Miles (Chris Patrick Simpson) is painfully raw in its desperation’
'it is in the aesthetics of its fine production that Storytellers makes its most lasting impression. Marcus Costello's set is stunning in its simplicity......evoke an atmospheric world of stark perspective and perception. Rory Pierce's measured score complements and couterpoints the action.'
'Costello's dancing lighting design is crucially effective, ensuring that the shape-shifting sense of reality in James' strange and eerie world is constantly moving, evading the rationalising impulses of the eye and the mind.'
The Irish Times, Gerry Colgan Friday 4th April 2008
‘A spooky tale of demonic possesion. The adaptor directs the quartet of Ruth McGill, Deirdre Monaghan, Helen Delaney and Chris Patrick Simpson with control and sensitivity, against an effective set and lighting design by Marcus Costello’
'The Storytellers production has begun a nationwide tour; be very afraid out there.'
Artszone , RTE Radio 1
‘Strong, clear and entertaining’
The Munster Express, Thursday 17th April 2008
‘Liam Halligan's sensitive direction and adaptation kept the many aspects of the story before the audience without any ghostly visions, just honest stage effects, eerie music and spot on acting’
'Liam Halligan made the play ever so spooky and atmospheric in an excellent set'
'The apparent mix of innocence and evil in the children was gripping'
Waterford News & Star, Friday 18th April 2008
‘Now and then a truly memorable theatrical work comes our way. So it was at Garter Lane when Storytellers Theatre Company presented their superb production of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw’
'Liam Halligan uses four actors in his riveting adaptation........Halligan's strong and insightful direction powerfully conveys the dark past and sexual undercurrents. The actors also excel themselves, not only in the delivery of dialogue but also in imparting, with skilful subtlety, the chilling spookiness of the piece'
'Marcus Costello's set and lighting, together with the special effects, especially the rainfall, were superbly effective'
'The Turn of the Screw is as complex as life itself and Storytellers Theatre Company are simply wonderful'
