An easy introduction to Opera as Ann Jennings and the professional singers of The Bavarian Operatic Repertory Company present the best of The Magic Flute with Prof. Kiermeier-Debre providing an explanatory commentary.

Ann Jennings is a Donegal born opera singer who enjoys a successful operatic career in Germany. This will be an excellent opportunity to see Ann and the rest of her colleagues from the Bavarian Operatic Repertory Company (BORC) as they present this very accessible version of one of the opera world’s most well loved comic operas.

Set in ancient Egypt, The Magic Flute is an exotic fantasy full of colourful characters including Pamina, the Queen's daughter, and Papageno, the Queen's bird catcher. The opera charts the exploits of Tamino, a prince, and Papageno the bird catcher, in rescuing Pamina who is imprisoned in the castle of a wicked demon, Sarastro. Their quest is aided by the supernatural assistance of the magic flute. To succeed in rescuing the princess, the duo must overcome all manner of trials and adventures.

The singers will perform in full costumes against the beautiful backdrops of Schinkel’s iconic paintings, originally created for a famous 1815 production of The Magic Flute. Aiding the performance will be Professor Dr Kiermeier-Debre, a prize-winning author and lecturer who will provide a narration as well as some explanatory commentary.
