‘A Pernicious woman who usurped the place of her husband and performed the part of a man’ describes Finola Iníon Dubh Uí Dhómhaill. Irish history has been reluctant to acknowledge that it was Red Hugh O'Donnell's mother, the Ineen Dubh (The Dark Daughter) who held Donegal for her son and created the political and military conditions that enabled him to challenge English rule in Ireland in the closing years of the 16th century.
Like Lady Macbeth, she had to shed all her female sensitivities in the battle to further the cause of her son. This new play, starring acclaimed Donegal actress Maura Logue as Inion Dubh, is an exploration of the life of this remarkable woman, who, even in ill health, is still capable of taking revenge against an enemy. Yet, as Iníon Dubh draws close to death, she finds herself wondering if it was wrong to place chieftainship of Donegal and Clan before the needs of the heart?
