Inhouse Productions by An Grianán Theatre
An Grianán Productions is the producing wing of An Grianán Theatre.
An Grianán is distinctive amongst regional venues for its success as a theatre producer. Thirteen full-scale touring shows have been produced over the last seven years including works by Brian Friel, Cathal O Searcaigh and Paul Boyd. Creative partners to date have included Yew Tree Theatre Company, Cork Opera House, Pavilion Theatre, Civic Theatre and The Lyric, Belfast.
In 2005 An Grianán commissioned Donegal based writer and storyteller Joe Brennan to write The Witchin’ Well. To date the show has done two tours of Ireland (Summer 05 and Spring/Summer 06) and was invited to take part in the Romanian International Theatre Festival for Children in Oct 2006 where it was performed at the Ion Creanga Theatre in Bucharest.
In 2006 we commissioned another Donegal writer Little John Nee to write a new adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk which enjoyed successful runs at An Grianán, and at the Civic Theatre, Tallaght over Christmas 06.
2007 was the 400th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls and to mark the occasion we produced two major dramas - Brian Friel's Making History (March /April 07) and Thomas Kilroy's The O'Neill (July 07).
2009
An Grianán celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2009 and to mark the occasion we presented two major inhouse productions. The first was Brian Friel's The Home Place, a co-production with Belfast's Lyric Theatre which was produced during Jan to March while we finish the year with a spectacular aerial version of The Snow Queen. 2010/2011
An Grianán was awarded funding to produce an innovative Arts and Drama Theatre based programme of activity supported by supported by PEACE III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Donegal County Council. Five major projects were presented in all: the Border Crossings Summer School, the Little John Nee Residency, Living history project The Echoes of Time, A Dramatic Legacy which featured the plays The Chronicles of Long Kesh and Tar Anall's Hidden Strengths and the children's play Up Where the Clouds Are, an innovative drama aimed at pre-school children. As well as the theatre performances in An Grianán and other venues in the North West border regions, a wide variety of workshops, masterclasses, talks and activities were made available free to a wide cross section of the community from pre-school children to senior citizens.
