PRESS RELEASE

Get Your Big Break!

An Grianán Theatre, in association with The Lyric Theatre, Belfast, are producing Brian Friel's latest play, The Home Place, in the New Year and are looking for two children to perform alongside the stars! The well known actors in the play include Ian McElhinney, Conleth Hill, Lalor Roddy, Julia Deardon, Aislin McGucken, Miche Doherty and Lisa Lamb.

The two children will take part in the show when it is in An Grianán and Omagh in early February. Auditions will take place on Sat 20th Dec from 11am until 1pm.

The girl MUST be aged between 10 to 12 years.
The boy MUST be aged between 12 to 14 years.

There is no point anyone older or younger than these turning up!

The girl's role is non speaking, the boy has a fair few lines. They appear in one scene only but it is the pivotal scene in the play, and they will be interacting with the twice Tony nominated actor Conleth Hill (nominated for the Broadway productions of Stones in his Pockets, 2001, and The Seafarer in 2008).

The production is part of An Grianán's 10th Anniversary celebration and in tribute to Brian Friel in his 80th year.

The Home Place is set during the Summer of 1878, a time of unrest and the early days of the Home Rule movement. The fateful events of play take place over a single day at the Lodge in Ballybeg, the Donegal home of the Gores, a planter family.

The Gores, father and son, are both in love with Margaret, their househeeper. All three pursue a hopeful dream of freedom from their history and heritage and the 'awful burden' of the big house. The situation quickly unravels, accelerated by Gore's cousin Richard, who unwittingly insults and inflames the local population during an already volatile time.

Friel's brilliantly crafted drama continues the historical probing which in Translations examined the tragic effect of a military operation to map the physical contours of the Irish landscape.

In this, his latest play, a scientific exercise to determine the Irish character unleashes the tragedy, which revolves around the ideas of national identity, love and belonging. Beautifully written, The Home Place is classic Friel.

An Grianán is distinctive amongst regional venues for its success as a theatre producer. Its previous productions by Brian Friel include the Irish Theatre Award winning Dancing at Lughnasa. Belfast's Lyric Theatre is Northern Ireland's premier theatre company.
