Rigoletto – Opera Theatre Company
Opera Theatre Company is delighted to announce a new production of Verdi’s tragic masterpiece RIGOLETTO, one of the greatest operas of all time. Directed by Selina Cartmell, in a newly commissioned contemporary translation by playwright Marina Carr.
When a father’s love goes too far…. when his instinct to protect blinds him to the consequences…. when innocence meets debauchery…. the result is a potent cocktail of lust, power, revenge and betrayal, all distilled into a musical experience of unparalleled intensity. Rigoletto opens on Friday 15 May in the National Opera House Wexford before touring nationwide until Saturday 30 May.
Critically acclaimed theatre director Selina Cartmell (Siren Productions, The Abbey Theatre, The Gate Theatre) dramatically reimagines the piece in a newly commissioned contemporary translation by Irish playwright Marina Carr, transporting this medieval tale into our time and our world.
This powerful and talented cast features the best of Irish and international operatic talent with Northern Irish baritone Bruno Caproni, a regular performer on the world stage (Met Opera, ROH, ENO & WNO) in the title role, and rising stars of the Irish stage, soprano Emma Nash (OTC YAA alumna) as Gilda, and mezzo Kate Allen as Maddelena. Brazilian tenor Luciano Botelho plays the degenerate womaniser The Duke with OTC stalwart John Molloy (Elixir, Carmen) as Sparafucile – assassin for hire. Rigoletto features a sterling cast of Irish singers in all other roles, together with a professional chorus.
Based on Victor Hugo’s play Le roi s’amuse, the tragic story revolves around the attempts of a desperate father Rigoletto and his efforts to protect Gilda his innocent daughter from the amorous attentions of his amoral boss The Duke.
Sung in English, Rigoletto is full of exquisite duets and instantly recognisable music– especially the famous tenor aria ‘La donna è mobile’ (The woman is fickle). Fergus Sheil conducts the OTC ensemble, with set and costume design by Alex Lowde and lighting design by Sinead Wallace.
