Artist's Statement
Born in Belfast, but now residing in Bangor, Co Down, I studied at Dublin Art College. Having recently returned to studying art from a career in Engineering, I reaffirmed my affinity with paint to explore the potential of texture and vibrant colours to excite the visual senses.
“Painting is inspiring, challenging and a great reward - every time”
Inspiration comes from everyday life. This vast scope of subject matter provides an unrivalled opportunity to explore new ideas and build on past success. Blending the paints directly onto the canvas enables a phased development of the central theme to produce the finished work. Although my artwork is not indicative of one particular style, I try to ensure that the finished paintings feature an innovative use of colour, charm and energy to express feelings and emotions. I see the world around me in vivid colours, where reflected light and images are projected onto the canvas. This multi layered technique using both knife and brush aims to build an atmospheric scene of dramatic depth and beauty.
“Art expresses an idea that cannot be conveyed by words alone”
Colour is the motivating theme behind each piece of artwork. Whether the land is under sunny or stormy brooding skies I will often try an imaginary use of colour to animate the subject matter. I use local iconic imagery and notable landmarks to set the scene and has been created to express the difference between rural Ireland and the dynamic cityscapes exploding around us.
The paintings capture the joy and vitality of life which we all experience and transport the viewer from fast changing cityscapes which spark memories, associations and aspirations of our remarkable city, to striking and beautiful rolling countryside, imbued with innocence, capturing a timeless world for us to absorb.
